Fr. Patrick’s Holy Homework
This week, let’s prayerfully read up on Proposal 3.
The Sacred Right of Voting by Fr. Patrick It’s a marvel to be able to have an opinion. The right to have an opinion, and to be able to express it, is sacred. I would say it is sacred because it involves intellect and free will, which are at the heart of God’s sacred design of humanity, “let us make human beings in our image, after our likeness.” (Gen 1:26) This sacred right enables us to have communion with God and each other, and to have communities. On and on we can think of examples of when relationships, communities and societies have been harmed because the sacred right to have a voice wasn’t acknowledged, nor the sacred dignity of the person.
Voting is a participation in the sacred God-given right to have an opinion, a voice, and to let it be known. Voting has a particularly important dimension to it because it is a real participation in attempting to help shape the norms and laws by which our societies live and abide. The Church is speaking up on Proposal three and encouraging people to vote “no” because it is a ballot proposal regarding significant moral issues. It has been justly termed the anything goes abortion amendment.
In these days I can’t help but think of one of the chants Pastor Dale (also known as Bishop Dale in his Detroit congregation) calls out whole-heartedly when he leads our ecumenical peace walks, “save our babies.” The scriptures make clear, the Church is more than buildings and believers, it is Corpus Christi – the Body of Christ. And in this hour, the Church is impelled by the love of Christ to speak up for the most defenseless, poor and marginalized among us and to encourage people to vote down Proposal 3. The point of the Good Samaritan story that Jesus told His disciples is don’t pass by on the other side of the road when someone is in dire need.
I’ll be 44 in a few months and am blessed to have been serving as a priest for close to 10 years. In those years, by God’s grace, I have helped women and men walk through the pain and trauma they have experienced from abortion and into the merciful arms of Jesus. For anyone who has been touched in any way by this most difficult matter, please know that Jesus is full of mercy and healing for all who come to Him and that there’s nothing He can’t heal. Some years ago, I told the Lord that the moment I could bring a crisis pregnancy center to Corpus Christi, I would do it. Why? Because no one is more prolife than my boss (G O D) and He loves His babies. Also, I was (and still am) painfully aware that Corpus Christi is logistically between two abortion clinics.
I think lots of people would choose life if they knew how sacred the gift they had was, and if they thought there was a way that they could make it work amid all of their challenges. God always has a way, and we Christians are called to help shine a light on the way. Proposal 3 is not the way, and there are so many, who if they could, would speak against it. But they have no voice as of yet, and so as disciples of Jesus, we have the sacred right to use ours to help them and their mothers and fathers. And then what? Don’t stop. Keep helping, live the life of mercy, give where you can what you can, be pro-life from the womb to the tomb and let your actions reveal that The Good Samaritan still walks the streets!

Eucharistic Adoration
It’s happening here at Corpus Christi!
The Eucharist is being exposed on the altar in church on the following schedule:
Tuesdays: 6:00pm – 8:30pm [Note: that’s a usual time for our neighborhood Evangelization efforts so prayer support is appreciated!]
Thursdays: 9:15am – 12:15pm [Note: Holy Hour for Priestly Vocations from 9:15am – 10:15am]
One of the greatest treasures of the Catholic faith is the Eucharist. Ever since the Last Supper, the Catholic Church has believed that the Eucharist is truly the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ. You are invited to come and spend time in adoration with Jesus at Corpus Christi as we begin to offer these new time slots for adoration. Ideally, we will have two people in the church before Jesus whenever adoration happens. On our parish website you will see two slots for each time. Please know that if the slot is filled there will still be plenty of room in church for you!
You can go directly to the adoration sign-up by clicking on the following button:
Our prayer list continues to grow for the deceased, the ill and the homebound. Please visit our parish bulletin for the current list on page 3. … and then raise a prayer for those on the list and your own special intentions. Simply click on the Bulletin button at the end of this email.
AND, please add to your list: “The prayer requests of those we have met during our Store Front Evangelization efforts and the Visiting Our Neighbors efforts”!
