I pray this email update finds you well! In this update, I’d love to take a little time to talk about a Catholic Treasure right down the road from us: Christ the King Catholic School!
Recently, Mr. Ivan Branson joined the staff as the new principal and I was blessed to do a brief interview with him about the school that you can view here
The Pastor of Christ the King, Fr. Vic Clore, along with Mr. Ivan Branson are both committed to helping make a Catholic grade school education possible for any parent, grandparent or guardian who wants that for their child. If you have children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews that you think you would like to consider sending to Christ the King School, watching the little video above and setting up a tour and meeting with Mr. Branson would be a great next step. Also, Corpus Christi does provide a $500-dollar subsidy (per child) towards tuition for any of our parishioners who have a child in a Catholic School.
Mr. Branson has provided us with an electronic brochure, a testimony letter from a parent and staff member and also a letter from him and Fr. Vic Clore. These resources are included with this email.
May the good Lord continue to bless us and may we continue to offer thanks and praise to God for all God’s kindness to us.
'Empowerment of the communities' is essential to any sustained growth. What can be more essential to an individual / neighborhood than the maturation of their children. That is our future. Learning how to gather information, to think critically and obtain skills enriches lives. Education, formal or otherwise, is a fundamental component for prosperity and personal enlightenment. As philosopher Lao Tsu said, "If you give a hungry man a fish, you feed him for a day, but if you teach him how to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.
Christ the King Catholic Church’s contribution to sustaining a local Catholic school that has a vast majority of non-Catholic students speaks for itself. Over the past few years of mentoring our teacher volunteers, I have had the privilege of interacting with CK students, parents & grandparents. I savor one time as I was signing into the school log (which gives me access to the 4th grade) an older gentleman came in with his small granddaughter. They were warmly greeted by the office staff who knew their names and he took the little one to class. After he kissed his baby-girl goodbye, he turned to leave. I caught his eye and he moved a few feet in my direction. He had this beautiful worn face, powerful eyes, inviting smile, and the most candid manner. He was a familiar soul. Placing his hand on my arm he looked straight into my eyes and started to thank me for 'schooling' his children (who all attended CK over the years) and now his grand babies. After telling me about each one of his boy’s success stories, he clasped my hand, squeezed it and whispered, “thank you”. As a lifelong Detroiter, I shared his parental experience. My first grader was bullied and ignored in the DPS. Placing her in my little neighborhood Catholic school changed her world --- she was safe, stimulated and loved. It set her future in the right direction and eased my heart. I knew this grandpa's journey. I was this grandpa. We both gave thanks for our endangered little neighborhood parochial school, that empowered our children who in turn enrich our community.
My connection to Christ the King Catholic is the school. I taught for 37 years in special education with high risks students. Access to a "decent" education can make or break an individual, and in turn a community. How can we 'break' years of injustice if we do not even know the story / history. Knowledge brings self-revelation and a connection to history. Opening minds & hearts helps us slow the violence.
